John worked on an important book manuscript that was well researched, but required extensive rewriting to turn the academically oriented prose into a smooth, exciting story. He did so quickly and energetically, always keeping me in the loop while. He did so while working with the author in a thoroughly professional manner. And the author (a globally renowned Ph.D.) wrote me, "Thank you for assigning John to my book. He was always professional and wonderful to work with!" John and I are working on a second project now, and I look forward to many more.

I have worked with John Banks for more than 10 years. John is an exceptionally dedicated and hardworking journalist. In his time working with me at ESPN, John was the lead editor on our NFL section and also worked on our international sites. His work was excellent. John’s coverage was always creative and comprehensive. John is a strong team leader. He built the largest sports coverage team at ESPN … NFL Nation. This team of editors and reporters did an outstanding job covering the NFL. John’s content budgets and plans were some of the most organized and detailed that I have ever seen. His work on international platforms was world-class. John was on the front lines of new and innovative products and editorial presentations. John embraced new publishing tools and processes. This is one of many reasons that he remains a top editor and leader in the ever-changing digital publishing landscape.

John is a tremendous journalist and manager who always delivers high-quality results. In five years working for John, I learned so much about how to successfully guide a team of writers and editors. He knows exactly when to push and when to pull to bring out the best in others. John's positive attitude is contagious, and his forward-thinking perspective is a distinct asset in any professional environment.

I had the pleasure of working closely with John for several years, both in Dallas and with ESPN. He knows how to get the most out of people he works with, and he knows how to get things done. He has a knack for understanding people’s strengths and weaknesses and putting them in position to succeed. John brings a positive energy and a go-getter attitude to everything he does. He also is fair and honest as an evaluator.

I worked remotely much of the time I worked under John, but communication was never a problem. He was always clear about what was expected of me, and he went out of his way to keep me informed about things I may have been missing. I could easily have become disconnected working across the country, but because of John that never was the case. That said, he also knew when to give me the space I needed to be as productive as possible. He definitely is not a micromanager type. And while demanding and constantly pursuing excellence, John always cared about work-life balance and was accommodating when life happened.

As my manager at DallasNews.com, John was a supportive and action-oriented supervisor who could drive a project from start to finish with more enthusiasm than anyone I ever worked with. I employ many of the journalism and management lessons I learned from him daily -- the most important of which was "if you want something done, don't call, don't e-mail, get up from your desk and go see them."

John is creative, driven and tireless in delivering a better product, no matter the medium. He is an idea-oriented individual who is always been an asset to his company and colleagues.
